The Installation of Gas Filters

Posted by TwickPlumbers on March 7th, 2013

Liquid gases such as butane or propane contain plenty of oily residues. These oily residues get into these liquid gases during distribution and manufacture and may get trapped in the flow of gas during use, clogging up the gas pressure regulator and valves, resulting in low gas pressure or gas regulator failure.

You could have avoided all those cold showers in the morning you’ve had to take because the gas stopped working, reason being the fact that the gas regulator has stopped working. You could avoid this scenario by having a metallic housed gas filter fitted, that has a replaceable cartridge filter that removes about 99% of oily residues before they get the chance to block your gas pressure regulator. All this can be done by a qualified gas safe engineer.

This gas regulator has an in-built saturation indicator that shows you when it needs replacing and it also has a multi-tool that helps you to unscrew the housing and is also used to remove or uninstall the filter from the gas system. You need only one filter for every regulator; however you will need two filters for an auto-changeover system.

Your gas engineer will have to perform a gas test once he has finished installing the regulator. It is important to remember that you should not smoke or light a flame during the entire installation process.

The whole process has been broken down into a few memorable steps namely: shut off the gas supply, disconnect the gas tail and the gas bottle, disconnect the regulator and the tail, connect the regulator and the filter attaching the male connector to the female connector, connect the filter to the gas tail, connect the cylinder back and then turn on your gas.

There is no doubt that the filter will need to be changed frequently depending on how often you use your gas. It is a quick and simple procedure, first you unscrew the housing of the filter wiping of any residue and then proceed to unscrew the cartridge. Use one of your gloves to envelop the cartridge you’ve just removed disposing it off safely. Install the brand new cartridge tightening it by hand and then screw the external housing in place.
