Importance of Concept Art in Movie Making

Concept art is the way of depicting a particular theme, visuals, concept or a state in movies and video games via illustrations. The artist will present a notion which is to be appeared in the visual medium hence it got the name concept art, where a concept is presented with help of illustration art. In the concept art world, the director or the script writer will tell the concept artist about the particular scene or a character in words only. It is the responsibility of the artist to grab the idea from mere words and present it in visuals exactly the way the director wanted.
In movie making, various processes are involved like writing, set designing, visualizing the concept, deciding the camera angles, sound, choosing the characters, adding special effects and deciding the type of music to be used. Visuals which involves real life characters and background is easily depict in the movie. All the real life actors can play their characters at a given set to present the idea of the movie. But if it involves intense unreal characters like a dinosaur, a badass alien or an entire army of fantasy characters, it is difficult to depict them in the movie.
The director has to think of different ways of presentation with help of the concept artist. The work of illustration of the idea of the movie or the video game is initiated with planning. The artist has to plan how the character will look like on the basis of the description given by the script writer. Although there are few software available for the illustration work of concept art, but good artist like to plan their characters with just a pencil on a piece of paper. He will begin with doodling on the basic outline of the character which will be later on perfected with fine art.
It is not necessary for the concept artist to design a character only but he can also work only on the illustration of a scene. While watching a fantasy movie, all the viewers get awed by the background sceneries, which most of the time are unrealistic, are designed by the concept artist only. Concept art is used in movie making, video games, designing a picture or any other visual medium to depict the notion. Without this, you cannot imagine to experience the effect of the special visuals created.
