Historical value, innovating manufacturing techniques and a bold aesthetic design, these are the three ingredients contained by a million dollar watch. Those who consider themselves true watch snobs will not miss out on a chance to get their hands on a vintage Panerai Watch which has survived a war and the 100 years following after that. When such auctions are organised, the crowd does not only consist of watches collectors, but also of buyers from all corners of the globe who want to own a significant piece of history.

Any fashion expert in the world would argue that the right accessories are sometimes more important than the whole outfit someone is wearing. If women are willing to spend hundreds of dollars on purses, shoes and jewellery, men are more inclined to throw their money on watches, belts and ties. When it comes to luxury watches for men there a few brands that have always been on top of business. With an amazing historical legacy, dating back from the Second World War, Officine Panerai is one of the best selling brands in the world. Although, the price for regular Panerai watches can start at a few hundred dollars, those accessories which are part of a limited edition or have some historical value can go up to $1 million dollars. If we were to rank the top five most expensive Panerai watches sold in the past years the numbers may surprise you.

Sold at an astonishing $235,000, the fifth most expensive Panerai in the world is the Limited Edition L’Astronomo Luminor Tourbillon 1950 Equation of Time Watch. Each year, Panerai sells limited edition watches that pay tribute to the past thus the Luminor previously mentioned was created in memory of astronomer Galilleo Galilei. Only 30 pieces like this exist in the world and each piece has the owner’s hometown engraved on the back as well as a rotating sky chart of that specific place. It is made out of polished and brushed titanium, with a 50 millimetre case and 2 millimetre thick sapphire crystal.

The second in line is the Panerai Luminor 1950 Tourbillon Equation of Time Watch which was sold for $248,400. Also called PAM 365, this watch has several luxury features such as an alligator bracelet strap, a titanium case and an anti-glare sapphire crystal window. The case measures 50 millimetres in diameter whereas its thickness goes up to 17 millimetres. The manufactures have also created a side protection for the crown which makes the watch more durable and more precise. It can withstand water pressure up to 100 meters of depth.

With a value of $400,000, Panerai Marina Militare Black Seal Watch ranks in third place as world’s most expensive Panerai watches. Like the Luminor situated on the fifth spot, the Black Seal Watch is part of a limited edition of only 140 pieces. It was made using special materials, such as sapphire for the 44 millimetres case. The watch was created around the year 1997, before Panerai was bought by Richmont and was initially sold at the price of $15.000.

One of the most famous limited edition collections Panerai has ever made was for actor Sylvester Stallone. The line was created at his request because he wanted to give the watches for his friends and family. Stallone’s collaboration with the Italian company started in 1997 when he wore a Panerai Watch for the movie “Day light”. The model is now known as Panerai Slytech and its selling price is around $420.000. It is part of a limited collection which contains only 95 pieces.

Last, but not least, we have the Panerai Kampfschwimmer Watch which was sold for the amazing price of $1 million. This vintage watch once belonged to an Italian Navy soldier who fought in the Second World War. It is a unique piece as only 39 such watches are known to exist in the world. All of them were worn by men in both German and Italian Army. Four of these watches are even more amazing because they have an unsigned “attack diver” dial and military words engraved on the back.
