Want to enjoy high speed connectivity that also has the capability to cover very long distances? Then, the Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series is probably the best option to avail. The series features three different variants: WS-X6704-10GE, WS-X6708-10G-3C, and WS-X6708-10G-3CXL. The WS-X6704-10GE model features XENPAK optics and 4 ports 10 GB Ethernet module. These types of modules generally support different pluggable optics for supporting distances up to a maximum 80 km over the single mode fiber, 15 m over copper, and 300 m over the multimode fiber. The other two variants are 8-port 10 Gigabit Ethernet module that provides up to 64 10 GB Ethernet ports in single Catalyst of 6500 chassis. These are perfect for deployment in aggregation layer of data centers and LAN campus. However, one must understand the fact that both these modules are totally interoperable with Cisco Catalyst 6500 Series supervisor engine 720 & provides 40 Gbps connection to switch fabric. Developed upon the Catalyst 6500 series that won many awards and accolades, the 10 GB Ethernet modules are totally compatible with every available catalyst 6500 line cards & services modules. This enables all the service providers & enterprises to offer completely new Layer 2 through 7 services & network capabilities for increasing the revenue & user productivity without even upgrading the complete equipment.

Cisco Catalyst 6500 series 10 GB Ethernet modules are designed for deployment in distribution & core of campus as well data center for traffic aggregation or even for inter building, POPs (points of presence), WAN edge, & MAN connections. These modules totally support IEEE 802.3ad Link Aggregation & Cisco EtherChannel® Technology for fault-tolerant connectivity & bandwidth scalability of a maximum up to 80 Gbps per Ether-Channel connection. Additionally, these modules also support hardware related QoS (Quality of Service), ACLs Access Control Lists (ACLs), & jumbo frames that guarantee secured & predictable performance for high bandwidth-intensive applications. The ws-x6704-10ge uses Cos queue mapping and DWIRR scheduler. It features 9 slot chassis that allows a maximum of 32 ports. The 10-GE model can occupy any slot in any of the Cisco Catalyst 6503-E, 6504-E, 6506, 6506-E, 6509, 6509-E, 6509-NEB-A, 7604, 7607, 7609 series chassis. However, it can only occupy the slots ranging from 9 through 13 in the Cisco Catalyst 6513 and Cisco 7613 chassis. The onboard memory is 256 MB default. However, it can be upgradable to 512 MB or even 1 GB. It uses by default CFC (centralized forwarding) engine. However, there is also optional chance for using the distributed forwarding engines with DFC3A, DFC3B, or DFC3BXL.
