Choosing a door handle

Door handles can feature different styles, shapes, and colors. They are used in any building and can be combined with a locking mechanism, allowing people to secure their houses and offices. Generally, a door handle is placed a few inches away from one of the side edges of the door.

While there are many versions of door handles, these door components can be divided in two main categories. The first category includes door handles that feature a latch device that engage other pieces of hardware that make the door open or close. The second refers to door knobs, a specific type of door handles that uses round operating mechanism.

These considerations are very important in the process of choosing the right door handle. The elderly and children have difficulties in using door knobs, therefore if you have very young or very old family members, you should think of purchasing door levers, because these provide more comfort in operation.

Then, take the material from which your door is made into account. If the door is made from plastic, such as PVC, the best handle for it would be also made of PVC, although a much more modern door lever would be made of stainless steel. Likewise, a metallic door requires a metallic handle, a glass door needs a glass handle, and so on.

After this, establish if you need locking mechanisms. If the modern door lever that you have in mind is destined to an exterior door, order a lock as well. If it is designed for an interior door, a locking mechanism is not needed, unless you want extra protection for a certain room. As a rule, bathrooms and the master bedroom are rooms that should present locks; the kitchen, living room, children's bedrooms do not require locks.

Finally, do not forget to consider your very own preferences. Of course that a vintage wooden door would accommodate very well a handle made from brushed nickel or weathered brass, but if you want a glass handle, no one stops you from purchasing the door component that you want. The same thing applies regarding the color of the handle; a black handle would best fit a black door, but if you want a red handle, you are free to purchase it.

Note that door handles are, in most cases, made from different materials than the doors they embellish, and this is very important in relation to their maintenance. To stay away from bacteria, you need to clean everything in your house on a regular basis, including your doors and handles. Follow the instructions provided by the door and handle manufacturers, to be certain that you do not affect the door/handle functionality when cleaning them.
