A Refresher On VSAT Internet Connectivity

Posted by intersat on July 28th, 2020

In the modern world, the majority of people acquire internet connectivity with the help of their phone lines and fiber optic cables. However, such connectivity is not always smooth, especially when it comes to the internet in Africa and relativity underdeveloped regions there.

This is one of the key reasons why increasing households and businesses belonging to these locations are turning to satellite connection these days.  In the case of satellite internet, a land-based internet connection sends the signal to a satellite dish, which subsequently redirects that signal to a distinctly personalized satellite dish. This signal is ultimately transferred with the help of a modem.  There are several contemporary businesses that use VSAT Internet in Africa to acquire access to satellite communicating devices and enjoy smooth connectivity.

What is VSAT?

VSAT is the short form for Very Small Aperture Terminals.  There are basically three key elements involved in VSAT technology, which include the key satellite, a central hub, as well as a host of smaller nodes that are kept diverse remote locations in order to form a Star topology using the satellite network. All of these nodes ideally communicate with the central hub with the help of a satellite. In the case of any added networks, like terrestrial MPLS, have to be integrated with this VSAT network; it can easily be done through a NOC (Network Operations Center) at the central hub.

In recent times, Geo-Synchronous satellites are most commonly used for the purpose of WAN/ broadband Internet connectivity as they have the capacity of providing a much more permanent coverage over a fixed range of area. Subsequent to Ku and C bands, in is the Ka band that has become increasingly popular in recent years, due to its high throughput performance capabilities. It can provide an excess of 100 Gbps per satellite).

Access in Remote Location

While broadband internet in Africa can be found in its large cities and urban hubs, many of the more remote areas of the continent are still deprived of smooth internet connectivity. VSAT however, makes it possible for people in such areas to avail the internet connectivity desired by them.  Providing adequate internet access has been one of the key traditional strength of Satellite Networks. A Satellite in the Geo Synchronous orbit would have the capacity to cover more than 30% of the surface of the earth, and offer internet connectivity to any area coming under that. This makes satellite connectivity extremely useful in rural areas, ships, and coastal regions, jungles, hills, etc.
