Italy is marked as one of the oldest wine producing countries. Italian wines are famous worldwide for their matchless quality as well as the broad spectrum of variety. Italy has more than one million cultivating vineyards which gives it the position of the largest wine producer in the world. In the broader sense, two varieties of grapes are grown in the region, the white grapes or the Bianco and the red ones named as Rosso. Each of them has a number of varieties. The wines produced from the Italian red grapes are considered as one of the best quality wines of the world. The taste and nature of the wine vary greatly depending on the type of the grape used and also the process of making wine.

Here is a short list of some of the most famous Italian red wines.

  • Amarone: This type of wine is produced from Corvina grapes. These grapes are grown in the Veneto region, and the grapes are partially dried before processing. It gives a rich taste combined with the sweetness.
  • Barbera: This red wine is produced in the Piedmont region of Italy.  It bears an intense flavour and a little of tannin that gives it slightly bitter taste.
  • Barolo: Produced from Nebbiolo grapes. It has a mixed aroma that includes strawberries, herbs and tar. The taste is sweet to bitter.
  • Barbaresco:The same Nebbiolo grapes are used, but the taste is lighter than the Barolo variety due to the difference in the process of preparation.
  • Brunello di Montalcino: Made from Sangiovese grapes. It tastes dry and bitter due to the tannin content. It takes at least 15 years to reach its best taste.
  • Chianti: Produced from the same Sangiovese grapes. Comes with tart-cherry flavor. The tannin content is moderate.  Varieties of Chianti wine are apt to be taken young, though some of the varieties add richness to its taste with age.
