School of Nursing in Nigeria

I want to tell you the differences between a Registered Nurse (RN), Registered Midwifery (RM) and Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN).

Not knowing the difference between these nurses if you are interested in nursing as a career won't be a good start.

As a Nigerian today, you can decide to become a nurse because you want to take care of people but then, what kind of Nurse do you want to be?

What kind of people do you want to take care of? Are you interested in taking care of pregnant women in their childbirth circle?

Are you interested in the amount of money that you can earn as a nurse? It's really your choice what you want from life.

Because you cannot be a Registered Nurse (RN) that attends a nursing school in Nigeria and expect to be paid higher than someone that schooled in the university, it doesn't work that way.

This doesn't mean that Registered Nurses or Registered Midwifery aren't paid well, it just means that BSN is paid higher.

School of Nursing-Registered Nurses

As one of the most versatile roles in the nursing industry, registered nurses (RNs) are highly in demand.

Working as an RN can be incredibly rewarding and impactful, as well as a great stepping stone if decided you want to advance your career.

What Is a Registered Nurse (RN)

Typically found in hospitals, medical offices, and clinics, a registered nurse assists doctors and other nurses in providing critical care to patients.

Duties of a Registered Nurse (RN)

Depending on the location, work setting, and level of education, a registered nurse may perform a variety of duties.

While most RNs provide direct patient care, specific job responsibilities and daily activities vary based on the needs of the healthcare team within which the nurse serves, the needs of the patient, and the patient demographics. Typical job duties and tasks of a registered nurse include:

  • Conduct physical exams to assess patient health needs and problems
  • Administer direct care to injured, disabled, ill, or convalescent patients
  • Review and maintain medical records
  • Implement and develop nursing care plans
  • Counsel patients and family members on disease prevention and health maintenance
  • Supervise the work of licensed practical nurses, nursing aides, and assistants
  • Educate patients about their medical conditions and treatment plans

School of Nursing-Registered Midwifery (RM)

If you are looking for a nurse speciality to pursue, you should take the time to learn what a nurse midwife does so that you can decide if midwifery is a good specialty area for you.

A nurse-midwife is a licensed healthcare professional who specializes in women’s reproductive health and childbirth.

In addition to attending births, they perform annual exams, give counselling, and write prescriptions.

Registered Midwives are professionals trained exclusively in midwifery through academics and apprenticeship, by direct entry. These “Direct-Entry Midwives” are licensed to practice home birth in Nigeria.

Midwifery is a specialist in nursing just like Ophthalmology in Medicine and Surgery.

Also, it is a specialist just like Anesthetic, Theatre etc

Registered Midwives are trained experts in the normal pregnancy and birth process. They refer to and/or consult with physicians when it is medically necessary.

Duties of a Registered Midwifery (RM)

Nurse-midwives provide a wide range of routine gynaecological services, prenatal and postpartum services and also attend births in homes as well as hospitals.

If you have always dreamed of being part of the delivery process or helping expectant mothers stay healthy, midwifery could be a great area of nursing for you.

How To Become A Registered Nurse and A Registered Midwifery

Having said all above, you may want to know how one can become a registered nurse or registered midwifery in Nigeria.

To earn this degree, you must attend a university and study nursing as a course. In Nigeria, it takes five years to study nursing at a university.
