Tuscany, Italy- a place where millions of people dream of living. You have to know that if a lot of people want to live there, there is going to be some kind of cost involved that keeps many people from being able to. The cost of living in Tuscany is admittedly high, but even in Tuscany there are ways to live the lifestyle of your dreams without breaking the bank.

If you go to cities that are well known, you might expect for the cost of living to be higher. Why not consider living in cities that are not as well known? If you go to a city like Pistoia, your cost of living will be lower. Pistoia is a city that has a very well preserved historical centre. Pistoia is less than an hour away from Florence. Here’s an example of some of the costs of food in Pistoia’s Saturday Market in mid-2011. A pound of oranges sold for $0.70 and artichokes were just $0.42! Enjoying an expresso was just $1.12. Other nonfood examples in Pistoia that were low cost were the clothes. Men’s shirts sold for $7 and women’s woolens went for just $14.

You could expect that rental space would be at a premium in Tuscany and you are right. The cost of a 430-square foot furnished studio apartment costs around $650 per month while one bedroom apartments are around $700. If you want to find a place that is affordable to rent, you might want to stick to the cities that are not as well-known but that are in close driving distance to larger cities. This way you can still have the experience of living in Italy.

If you want to cut down on your cost of living in Tuscany, one thing you can do is shop the markets. You will get the best value because the produce will be fresh and the cost will be lower than if you shop for products in a grocery store.
