How to Show Community Support for Adoption

Posted by provplace on September 24th, 2013

Adoption, while regulated by federal and state governments, is often made possible through the efforts of non-profit organizations. Donations and contributions from advocates of adoption help cover costs for these organizations, so support from the community is invaluable to these non-profits. The government sets standards and regulations to ensure that every adopted child is given a safe and secure home, but it is the hard work of volunteers and professionals at adoption agencies that really impacts these individuals’ lives.

Adoption agencies work with birth mothers, adoptive couples and families, and infants and young children in need of homes. Through their work, everyone involved in the adoption process is given an opportunity for a better life. Young women and teens that are facing unplanned pregnancies and are not yet ready to take on the responsibilities of parenthood receive individual attention, counseling, housing and medical care to keep mother and baby healthy. At the same time, they are able to take the time to consider their options and determine if placing their baby for adoption is the right choice for them. Couples who are ready to start or grow their own families are given the opportunity to welcome a son or daughter into their home. And, most importantly, a child gets to grow up and live in a nurturing environment with a loving family.

Knowing all of the wonderful work that staff and volunteers at adoption agencies are able to provide, many people choose to support these organizations. It is vital to their success to have the backing of their community. Though some organizations receive federal funding, to impact and help more people adoption agencies often rely on donations from their supporters. Today, there are many ways in which individuals can support the work of adoption agencies from volunteering their time to contributing funds.

Volunteering is a wonderful way to become involved in your community and to show support for a cause you care about. Volunteers at adoption agencies sometimes work with individuals, at adoption events, or help the agency keep up with administrative and maintenance duties. For adoptive couples or families who have been through the adoption process themselves, volunteering some of their time to talk to prospective couples can help them understand the benefits and the challenges of adoption. Knowing what to expect when considering adoption could help a couple open their hearts to a baby or child.

Volunteering your time is priceless and shows true solidarity for the work that the adoption agencies are doing, but these organizations also rely on contributions. While most of these organizations are not for profit, they do have salaries to pay and facilities to maintain. In addition, many organizations have large campuses where birth mothers can live during their pregnancy. Donations from supporters allow adoption agencies to run organized operations, maintain nice housing facilities, offer free pre-natal care to young women in need and keep the cost of adopting a child low. If you want to support a worthy cause in your community, adoption is certainly one to consider.
