Top 5 Deck Cleaning Tips

Deck cleaning and restoration are the best way to keep your wooden deck in tiptop shape. Not only during the winter season, it’s throughout the year that your deck can take quite a beating. From the rain, to the snow and harsh sun, the wood will certainly get damaged. Nonetheless, there are a few simple tips that will help clean and restore a wooden deck. Some tips before getting started:

  • Use a nylon bristle broom or brush for good scrubbing power.
  • A pressure washer can be conveniently used to clean the deck provided it is done correctly, and the wood is in a good shape otherwise the pressure can cause further damage. You can start safely at a 500 psi setting and work up from there. Make the fan tip setting, which ranges between 40′ and 60′ tip size and spray it with the grain.
  • Consider doing a test first before applying chemicals and detergents to ensure that no discoloration or damage occurs. The kind of wood, its present condition, the type of paint or stain responds differently to a treatment.
  • A normal garden hose along with a spray nozzle attached can be conveniently used if fall short of a power washer; however, you will need to put some elbow grease into the job.

Quick Notes:

  • It is wise to spray deck with water first before using the wash recipe; this ensures that the surface is prepared for the cleaner work its magic.
  • Use quite warm but not extremely hot that you cannot rest your hand in it.
  • Rinse surface well while removing the cleaner.
  • Remove the solution before it dries
