Painting a steel roof

Generally, a permanent roof is one made from metal shingles. People who do not have a lot of money to invest in a resistant roof, yet who want their roof to withstand for at least 25 years select aluminium shingles. People who have more money to invest in their house, and also in the safety of their family, choose a steel roof.

A steel roof is made from iron and carbon shingles, is weather resistant, and cannot be destroyed that easily as a wooden roof. At the same time, steel does not have the same behavior as aluminum, when it comes to hot summers and cold winters. Steel is a hard element, very resistant to corrosion and a perfect isolator.

Unfortunately for those who have to paint a steel surface, steel is slick and nonporous, in other words, it is very difficult to apply color onto it. That is why painters need to apply a specific type of primer before applying the actual paint. Although the operation of painting a roof might seem easy, take into consideration that it takes place at heights, that is why only specialists can perform it.

Before painting a roof, whether it is a permanent roof or not, professional painters need to test it to determine if it can hold more people. The painting task is pretty easy when performed by a professional, yet it can take a few days, if that professional is not helped by another one. So test the roof to determine if it is sturdy enough to sustain more painters.

If it is about a roof made from steel shingles, and not about a shake roof, made from wooden shingles, painters do not have to worry about the sturdiness of the roof. A damaged roof is one that bends when you step on it. If this is the case with your roof, it may not need a painting job, but a repair service or a total replacement.

The first operation performed by professional roof painters is the cleaning of the roof. Usually, painters use pressurized water to eliminate all the debris and dust accumulated on the roof. After that, they let the roof dry naturally and only when it is dry, they apply the primer to abrade the roof surface and help the paint adhere better to the roof.

Then, painters climb onto the roof with only one bucket in hand. This protects them from falling and getting injured. When they consume all the paint inside the bucket, they either descend and get another bucket of paint or ask one of their colleagues to provide them with one, without having to go down.

The paint is applied in one or more layers, depending on the preferences of the home owner. Generally, a steel roofing needs at least two layers of paint to look good. When all the roof is painted, painters allow it to get dry. Usually, a high-quality paint gets dry in a few hours, that is why it is recommended to purchase this kind of paint, instead of getting a cheaper one and praying for sunlight and wind immediately after the painting job.
