Laser assisted cataract surgery - femto laser

Posted by keywhitman on October 24th, 2013

The human eye is the most intricate and delicate part of the body. Because of its intricacy, precision technology to treat eye conditions, such as cataracts, can provide patients the best outcome possible.

Femtosecond (femto) laser technology is considered to be the “next big thing” in refractive and cataract surgery and is one example of how technology, in Dr Whitman’s opinion, improves the accuracy of cataract surgery. In traditional cataract surgery, the eye surgeon will carefully cut an incision in the eye using a hand-held blade. The clouded lens is then removed and replaced with an intraocular lens implant. Femtosecond laser technology  will eventually eliminate the need for a hand-held blade, but instead apply a beam of laser light energy to the eye, creating a precise incision.

Laser assisted cataract surgery also provides eye surgeons ability to view the cataract in high resolution and precisely perform some of the most delicate portions of the surgery including opening the capsule of the cataract itself as well as the treatment of astigmatism using a computer controlled laser beam of light. The laser is then able to create a perfect incision with computer precision every time.

Traditional manual cataract surgery is a routine surgery performed with great success, but femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery may improve the accuracy and safety of the procedure, helping to provide even better results for patients.

Key-Whitman eye surgeons at the Dallas surgery center utilize a Femtosecond Laser Platform that was received FDA approval in August 2012. This technology is the single platform for not only cataract surgery, but refractive procedures as well.

Laser-assisted cataract surgery patients will have a greater out of pocket expense, but this potentially more accurate approach to cataract surgery can also reduce dependence on glasses following cataract surgery when paired with our high technology lens implants.
