Finding a Stash of Threads for Machine Embroidery?

We’ve been in our new home for eight months now, and I am still unpacking! This is ridiculous. I give myself the excuse that I have to care for my old knee and back injuries, but that isn’t always true. More accurate is the fact that I can’t stand to get my hands dirty. I’ve been like that since I was very small, and it amuses me now because I am usually very no-nonsense about getting things done.
Getting my hands dirty this week, though, was rewarded with discovering a few items I had forgotten about. First, there was a big storage bin full of fabric that I thought had been thrown out after the Great Basement Flood of 2011. I was overjoyed to find many pieces that included some of my favorites as well as CDs filled with machine embroidery designs!
I also discovered a stash of thread for machine embroidery tucked under hundreds of fabric squares in another bin. How is that possible? I’m usually always organized with my thread, but I didn’t realize this small stash was even missing. Maybe it’s just another indication that my quilting and embroidery supplies are out of control!
I’ve been slowly selling some of my unused items, and my sewing tables are becoming a lot less cluttered. But, there is still so much packed in the garage that I know my sewing room will be like the tide; clean and mellow at some points and full and tumultuous at others until I find a place for everything. I like organizing, but this is so very tedious.
With Christmas coming up, I am feeling an urgent need to know what I have and where it is at. I want to create hand-made gifts from some of my many embroidery patterns, but I don’t want to go out and buy new fabrics or supplies because I’m sure I already have what I need. I just have to find it. Finding that stash of embroidery thread helps a lot in that area at least.
Clearing up the garage, and my stash, gives me lots of inspiration to sew, quilt and do my embroidery, but the physical activity takes up all my energy. It’s like anticipating something so greatly that when it finally appears, it’s a huge disappointment. I want to stitch, but can’t. How frustrating! Maybe that’s what I need to finish unpacking. A week spent getting my hands dirty followed by the absolute bliss of creative expression.
For now, I’m off to shower so that my hands will be in absolutely pristine condition before digging into the dozen or so large storage bins still facing me. It would probably be a good idea to take a notepad and pen out there with me so I can make notes on where I put anything that I’ve unpacked. I’ve been unpacking for eight months, so it’s a wonder I remember where anything is. As far as I know, I’ve unpacked the same bins more than once!
