Sewing, Quilting, and Embroidery in a Gloomy Weather Gives a Perfect Sunshine

I sat down to sew yesterday afternoon, and it felt like a home-coming.  It’s not that I haven’t sewn in a long time or anything.  However, my favorite time to sew is when the weather is gloomy.  In sunny Southern California, those perfect times don’t come too often.  We have a storm front coming in, so I planned accordingly.  I have a lot of quarter- and half-yard pieces of fabric that need to be washed, so I’m zig-zagging the edges to keep them from fraying.  It’s not exciting, but it’s still sewing!

Generally, I don’t like Fall.  The weather cools off and my knees start aching.  This year is different, though.  I spent four very cold, wet years of Fall and Winter in Greece and came to love it.  This year, it feels like home.  I imagine using my sewing machine while keeping an eye on my embroidery machine as it stitches nearby.  I see lots of pretty embroidery patterns taking shape as I press quilt blocks.  Lots of noise, but superbly pleasant!

Imagining is all that I can really allow myself to do right now as I continue to organize my quilting and embroidery supplies.  Getting the garage cleared out is the main goal and it is coming along nicely.  However, with the cold expected for the next few days, I’m making time to stitch, too.  When the sun returns, I hope to have made friends with my machine embroidery designs and have all my larger fabric scraps ready for the wash.  It’s a humble goal.

I adore the sound of rain when I am sewing.  I see sewing, quilting, and embroidery as old-fashioned, homey activities regardless of how modern the equipment is.  When the weather is stormy, staying inside the cozy home goes well with other homey tasks.  Combined with cooking hearty meals and baking, it feels as I imagine all the generations before me must have felt; at home, comfortable and busy.

It never fails, though, that I must venture out during stormy weather.  Donations of old clothing must be dropped off and groceries must be purchased.  Today, I think I may also drop by the fabric store to see what I can see.  It is sewing related, so it fits in with my stormy stitching needs!  They also have a couple of new machine embroidery guides I want to check out.

I already have a nice roast with potatoes, onions and carrots in the crock-pot for a nice, easy dinner this evening.  After my shower, I’ll take care of the day’s few responsibilities, and then nothing will keep me away from my sewing and embroidery.  I get such delightful ideas while I’m doing basic stitching.  While hemming fabric edges may be boring, the possibilities for new projects keep me going.

When do you like to sew?  Do you spend time mending or let your imagination take flight with fabulous machine embroidery designs?  Is quilting your thing or do you visit all the possible realms of stitching?  As long as we enjoy it, I guess that’s all that truly matters!
