Pediatric Dentistry and Sedation

Posted by Dentalworks4kids on November 30th, 2013

Is your child having a toothache? This word certainly gets goose bumps and may send chills down your body. Depending on your child’s age he or she may not be able to communicate that they are having discomfort. Some signs to look for may be a lack of interest in food, irritability, loss of sleep and even poor performance in school. Your child may also be apprehensive about going to the dentist, which could cause the toothache to even worsen. For children who are scared of the dentist, Sedation Dentistry is the best option which can be used to complete all necessary dental work in a safe and comfortable environment, while ensuring your child has an overall positive dental experience.

What is Oral Sedation?

Oral sedation is recommended for moderately apprehensive children. It helps children relax during dental procedures while still being awake. Your child may slur some words and experience drowsiness but will remain awake the entire time. Even though your child is awake they will most likely not remember even having the procedure completed.

What is Dentistry Asleep or General Anesthesia?

At Dental Works 4 Kids we are one the first offices to offer Sedation Dentistry for our patients in a safe and comfortable environment. General Anesthesia or Dentistry Asleep is recommended for children who are extremely anxious and cannot sit still long enough for treatment. It is also recommended for children who may require extensive dental treatment. For these children it is much easier and safer for them to have all the work completed under General Anesthesia to ensure they receive the best possible treatment while having a positive dental experience versus having multiple unpleasant dental appointments. Under General Anesthesia your child is comfortably asleep and monitored by a medical anesthesiologist the entire time.
