Benefits of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Posted by Dentalworks4kids on November 30th, 2013

There has been a large paradigm shift in Orthodontics and the way we help improve smiles. Traditionally, in the past, we would recommend for your child to loose all their primary (baby) teeth before proceeding with Orthodontic treatment to straighten crooked teeth and improve their smile. This would typically mean that your child would be of teenage years with braces. A cause for concern would arise if there was not enough room for all your child’s teeth to fit in the mouth due to excessive crowding or if there were any underlying jaw problems. If this were the case our Orthodontic recommendation would be to extract a few permanent teeth to make room for everything else to fit, or recommend surgery to correct the underlying jaw problems. What we didn’t realize was that by doing this your child’s profile could be negatively affected as they grow and develop because teeth give support to our lips and cheeks.

Our knowledge and treatment philosophy have greatly developed and we now know that many of these issues can be prevented with early treatment. When your child is young, between the ages of 8-10, we can help to ensure there is enough room for all the teeth to fit and correct any underlying jaw problems before they become a permanent cause for concern. We can also help to correct any abnormal sleep or breathing disorders that may be related to Orthodontics and also help to eliminate early habits such as finger sucking and forward tongue postures, which can affect the way your child’s jaws grow and develop.

Early preventive Orthodontic treatment is the key solution! This helps us to help your child grow and develop to their full potential and help reduce complicated treatment in the future.
