What does the Google Penguin update mean for your website?

Posted by donaldmiller on December 1st, 2013

The Google Penguin update is nothing but a way to lower the page rank of those websites that have been using unethical means to promote backlinks. To put it in layman’s terms if there is a website that has been buying PR links or buying to get links from unrelated websites they cannot be offering relevant content to its visitors. For such websites a lower page rank will follow and they will not be able to get high visibility on SERPs for keyword searches where they were.

For many websites the Penguin update has really not meant anything. Google changes it search algorithms constantly and once in a while comes up with some landmark changes. On April 24 2012 Google first came up with the Penguin update. Further versions of this update were published subsequently and in October 2013 we saw Penguin 5, or Penguin 2.1 as it is popularly known as.

For earlier SEO strategies it meant a lot to have more backlinks. They would get highly rated by Google. However, many websites and SEO companies manipulated this guideline. They would buy links or engage in link farming or insert links in blog comments or use many other simple means to ensure that they got a lot of backlinks. With the Penguin update Google put a stop to all these practices. Now Google focuses on content and relevancy of links and only those websites that generate backlinks naturally are the ones that continue to get high page rank on Google.

When you own a website you need to cover all bases. The Penguin update is not new and Penguin 5 is just an update of Penguin 2. If all this while you didn’t check where your backlinks are getting originated or you never kept a check on the practices of your SEO partner then you have to suffer. And once hit by Penguin you cannot do anything. There is no way to get those ranks back.

If you have a website and you get SEO done for the website then you need to ensure that the job is being done ethically. You cannot leave everything to your SEO partner and wash your hands off. You need to ensure that the content on your website is fresh and updated and the links are active and relevant. You may have fewer links but they should be relevant and quality links.

Although many SEO companies crib that the Google Penguin update is nothing but additional headache they need to be reminded that what Google wants is ethical SEO. Nothing changes for a website due to the Google Penguin update if the content is updated and fresh and the links are generated naturally.

Gamit is one SEO company that can ensure that your website is never hit by the Google Penguin update . Gamit has been in the SEO domain for more than six years and it has earned quite a reputation for offering ethical SEO. If you haven’t experienced Gamit yet this is the time.
