Child eye care – when you should visit a children’s eye specialist

Eyes and vision are a treasured gift and should be looked after diligently. Maintaining good eye health and taking care of the eyes is a relatively simple task especially when it comes to the eye health of children. However, in some cases it might be necessary to visit a children’s eye specialist. The astonishing fact is that almost 35% of children in school have vision related problems, but in most cases these problems are undetected and these children continue to suffer with eye problems even though a solution can be attained quite easily with the help of an eye doctor.

First of all there are some symptoms that can be observed in children which could show possible vision impairments. You should look for these symptoms and take your child to a children’s eye specialist  if you observe these symptoms. Let us take a look at these symptoms and also remember that if you observe three of more of these symptoms, you should visit an eye specialist:

•              The child holds objects very close to the eyes

•              Experiences headaches after watching TV or reading

•              Experiences blurred vision with school work or reading

•              Has difficulty in comprehending what has been read

•              The child constantly rubs the eyes, squints or blinks continuously after close work

•              Gets tired of reading in a short amount of time

•              Has difficulty in copying from the board or textbook

•              The child has one eye that is turning inside or outside

•              Often has red and watery eyes

•              Sits very close to the television when watching TV

These are the symptoms of vision impairment in children which require attention. It is recommended that a child should be given a complete eye check up by a children’s eye specialist at age 5, or earlier if problems are observed. Once a child starts school, he or she should have a yearly eye check up to keep eye problems under control.
