We live in a very mobile world: ourselves, our family, our friends and acquaintances, we all travel incomparably more, farther and for longer periods of time than people did just a few decades ago. Using long distance communication methods has become a necessity; many of us are probably interested in having a prepaid calling card which we can conveniently use to phone abroad.

                There are various ways to communicate with our dearest ones even if they are at the other end of the world, today. If we do not have an international calling card, the internet offers the cheapest possibilities; in fact, as long as both persons have a computer or a smart phone with Android and with internet connection, a long-distance conversation through e-mail, instant messaging programs like Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger or AIM and voice calling software such as Skype or Windows Live is free of charge. However, it is not always that we find ourselves in front of a computer or that we have internet connection on our mobile phones, so the regular telephone call remains the best option.                 If we want to use our phone to call our friends and the members of our family that are abroad, we have a couple of options: we could either choose the special options offered by the mobile network operator with whom we have a contract, either use a prepaid calling card. Generally, the second alternative is most convenient from a financial point of view, especially if we plan on calling someone abroad for more than once. There are very attractive offers proposed by mobile network companies, but there are certain inconveniences, nevertheless. For instance, the prices are advantageous only for calls made in specific countries. Also, once we have signed the contract for the subscription, in most cases we have to pay a monthly sum no matter if we actually make international calls or not. All in all, it seems that purchasing a prepaid calling card is more advisable.

                Nevertheless, even when purchasing a prepaid calling card, we should pay attention to several aspects if we want to make sure that we are going to be happy with our choice. First, we should always ask about maintenance fees before buying an international calling card. In some cases, there are some monthly charges required for prepaid cards as well. If we are not aware of this fact, we might end up with almost no budget for making calls after a while, even without having used the card for more than a couple of minutes. At the same time, we should check carefully the rates for every type of international call, as they might be different depending on the network the number we are calling belongs to. We should simply make sure we know how much we are paying; things are often seem more expensive simply because we are not fully aware from the start of the costs that are involved.
