No sooner has one award season culminated with the biggest award of them all (read the Academy Awards) than another one has already come knocking and for the 31 year old actor, Jamie Dornan, this award season bears good news. The hunky-is-an-understatement actor has been roped in to play the role of kinky businessman and entrepreneur Christian Grey, who has a BDSM fetish. But that’s not why he is in the news lately, the actor, who has created enough ripples in the entertainment world with his stand-out performances in ‘The Fall’ and ‘Once Upon a Time’, will be seen this year at the IFTA or the Irish Film and Television Awards.

Often dubbed as the ‘Irish Oscars’ the gold statuette is a coveted win and considering that the Jamie Dornan has been nominated in the category of the Best Lead Actor in Television, along with stalwarts such as Tom Vaughn Lawlor, Gabriel Byrne and Chris O’Dowd. Gabriel Byrne, Chris O’Dowd and Tom Vaughn Lawlor have been nominated in the same category as Dornan for their work on Quirke, Moone Boy and Love/Hate respectively. Jamie’s fellow nominees have only made sure that the competition is going to be tough and everyone has to fight tooth and nail to walk home with their Irish Oscar.

Having wrapped up the shooting of his first major film, Fifty Shades of Grey, which is an adaptation of Erica James’ novel of the same name, the star has renewed shooting for the second season of ‘The Fall’ in Belfast. In the crime thriller, which is set in Northern Island, Jamie Dornan plays a character who leads a double life, of which his wife, children and workers quite oblivious. Former X-Files actress, Gillian Anderson also stars in the series, but she plays the role of someone who is on the other side of the law. She plays a Detective Superintendent of the Metropolitan Police, who is assigned the case of finding a serial killer, who attacks and kills young and professional women in the Irish city of Belfast.

The gripping, edge-of-the-seat drama features Jamie Dornan in this very role, that of a serial killer by night, but a sober man, a bereavement counsellor, husband to a neo-natal nurse and a doting father to two children by day. With the title of being the ‘highest rated drama launch’ in about eight years, it was beyond a doubt that the series would be picked up for a second season and that is precisely what has happened.
