For those of us who have never or rarely moved to another part of the world to live, the notion of needing to obtain health insurance to secure long-term residency in that location may be a very unfamiliar one.

If, then, you are looking to live in Spain or already do so, you might not be well-versed in all of the requirements that apply as far as medical insurance for residenciais concerned… or for that matter, everything else you need to think about when seeking such health cover.

Will I require health insurance just to live in Spain?

Spain is a wonderful country to which to relocate from a climate, cultural and lifestyle point of view. It also just happens to have one of the world’s most respected healthcare systems but the flip side of this is that you’re likely to need to have medical insurance in order to take advantage of it.

Not everyone who moves to Spain must have private medical cover – or at least, not straight away. If you are a national of a European Union (EU) member state, for example, you will be entitled to free healthcare for your first three months living in Spain, as long as you have a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

Those staying on a longer-term basis of more than 90 days, however, will need to take out a private health insurance policy, whether or not they are from the EU.

We can take the stress out of finding residency health insurance

On top of determining whether you need health insurance for your life in Spain, if you do indeed require such cover, you will then have to figure out which medical insurance plan represents the best option for you.

Unfortunately, when you’re trying to fulfil residency requirements in Spain, you can’t just select any old medical insurance plan you come across. That’s because, if you are to secure legal residency or a foreigner identity card – otherwise known as a ‘TIE’ card – you’ll need your chosen cover to have zero excess or co-payments, according to the current rules.

There’s more that you’ll need to know about medical insurance for residencia, of course, but this is where our team here at Ibex Insurance Services comes in. As an insurance broker that is largely geared towards serving the needs of expats in Spain, we’re well-placed to advise and direct you towards the health insurance plans that will best meet your full range of requirements.

You can start the process of obtaining the right medical insurance for residencia by calling our Spain number of 900 102 527, visiting an Ibex office in-person, or even requesting a quote online now.

Whichever route you pick to getting in touch with us, we’ll strive to take the hassle and stress out of the process. That way, you can swiftly get back on with making the most of the various other aspects of your life in this fabulous part of southwestern Europe.
