It is not hard to see why some kids want to grow up to be a marine biologist. The oceans are not only massive and downright cool, they also have tons and tons of plant and animal life living in different ways all over the planet. In its own world, aquatic life has fish, sharks, plants, rocks, dirt, and tons and tons of currents moving it all around and into each other. To a human, the seas should be impenetrable.

It makes the actions of China, who has recently encroached on neighboring countries’ oceans, seem existentially foolish. You literally cannot open a naked human eye underwater to see, so how can humankind claim so much authority over the ocean? Though man may never rule the oceans, he and she now have the science to monitor it. With an ultra short baseline, boats can now measure things such as distance to the ocean floor.

With the right equipment, scientists are able to not only monitor the ocean floors, but also install equipment to help them monitor currents long-term. With the help of an acoustic doppler current profiler, they use mechanisms to see in which direction the water is headed, at what speed and with how much force. To do so, they need the help of sonar and radar technology.


The current profiler has a conduit pad which sends out doppler signals out into the water, which come back after bouncing off the currents of the water. Depending on the direction of the currents, scientists have a better chance at understanding where marine life is headed. They are able therefore to make adjustments in their equipment for long term projects.

Being able to tell which way the water is going is an incredible help to a team interested in either scientific or commercial research into an ocean. By being able to tell where the water is going near the surface, meteorologists can also tell more about the patterns of the wind, and when perhaps a hurricane or tropical storm may be approaching. Furthermore, having a steady stable of materials to work with when a storm happens can help a team decide when to drill for oil or install their next devices. With the right marine scientific equipment, you can also be sure that the waters you are diving into are safe. If you are unsure about the safety of the waters that you are attempting to either research or draw resources from, you could run into some serious dangers.

Thankfully there is also the help of an ultra short baseline which you could use when you are researching the ocean. This piece of marine maintenance and tracking equipment can also help you tell the distance between the boat and a particular object in the ocean. Most of the time, you may use this equipment simply to tell how far your boat is from the bottom of the ocean. But you can also use the ultra short baseline to measure whether or not there are interfering items on the seafloor as well. You never know as a scientist when your equipment will pick up the presence of another marine researcher’s installed machinery.
