This year, three new Panerai Subs join the ranks: the PAM 683 (black ceramic bezel), the PAM 959 (gray dial and blue ceramic bezel) and the PAM 960 (Carbotech case), bringing the total number of 42mm Subs to five with stainless steel bezels, the 682 and the rose gold 684 being the other two. From a stubborn purist's point of view, these smaller references are more or less in line with the brand's founding principles (e.g. Due), but I can't emphasize enough how important a more diverse range of sizes and designs becomes if the brand continues to evolve. The 683 is reminiscent of the most iconic look of modern dive watches from a trio design perspective, but should also feel moreplica panerai watches st familiar in the Panerai design lexicon. It looks like it was hit by a shrink ray in 1389. This has long been one of my favorite dive watches (Panerai or otherwise). Not only is it big and strapping, but the polished elements of the black dial and the raised subtle demarcations on the bezel are perfectly complemented by the ceramic bezel. The end result is modern, masculine, and undoubtedly great. But at 47mm, it's also unwearable for most people. The 42mm Luminor case corrects this problem. It still detects a few hairs between the 50mm and 2mm lugs, but low against the wrist, and its perceived size is further limited by all the brushed surfaces on the case. Closer inspection reveals a number of other subtle differences between the 683 and 682, such as the reordering of the dial text markers (now showing "Panerai, submersible, automatic") and the addition of a 'water resistance indicator' clock at 6 o'clock. This is partly due to the reorganization of Panerai's main collection, which now includes Radiomir, Luminor, Luminor Due and Submersible, according to CEO Jean-Marc Pontroue. The "1940" and "1950" designations are gone forever. The 683 joins a trio of my personal favorites: the 959, which borrows its bright blue ceramic bezel and mottled "sharkskin" gray dial from the Guillaume Nery PAM 982 dive chronograph launched in December, but with an ultra-rugged case that's as bright as I really think many dive watch fans will find it.
