Bit Coin Mining and The Potential Loss of Your Loot

Whilst the majority of us may just buy our ‘Bit Coins’ for us on the Internet; there are those among us who prefer to ‘mine’ for their coinage in the same way that during the gold rush ‘tinpanners’ used to sift their way through river beds and springs.

Nowadays though the river beds and springs have become the internet and the tools used to find these little nuggets have been swapped for computers with superior computing power i.e. high powered CPUs or GPUs.

Indeed for some the idea of mining for ‘Bit Coins’ is something that appeals to them on a business level.  Depending on the level of computing power and time you wish to invest you may well make some physical money by allowing the GPU or CPU to go searching the Internet and then complete series after series of complex algorithms and puzzles to unlock the coinage.

For the most part now though the GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) or what many might refer to as the graphics card, is being used to mine for ‘Bit Coins’ as they are as powerful as most CPUs (Central Processing Units) and can perform higher levels of scientific calculations a lot faster than their CPU counterparts.

Mining, if you wish to do so as a business, normally requires a chain of computers linked together in order to increase the processing power that is utilised and to this end it is worth remembering that at some point in the process the chances of a problem with a hard drive can be greatly increased.  This is even more so if the machines chained together in order to complete these calculations are left running over long periods of time without powering down.  General wear and tear can be a common issue when it comes to the failure of a hard drive; let’s be honest all hard drives regardless of their make or size have a limited life expectancy as does any piece of computer hardware.  To which end continually running them to capture and store the ‘Bit Coins’ you might ‘mine’ from the Internet may take its toll.

You should also consider problems occurring with hard drives in these machines as a result of problems or issues arising with faulty onboard circuitry.  Onboard printed circuit boards can fail or become corrupt if the firmware that governs them is either out of date or suffers an issue perhaps due to a power outage.  Indeed a power outage may cause the entire chain to collapse and whilst the majority of machines in the chain will work again there may be one or two that don’t because the sudden stop has caused the actuator arms, read/write heads or platters to lose their way.

If any of the aforementioned occurs then there is a risk to your ‘Bit Coinage’ and therefore to any potential financial gain you might achieve so we recommend contacting us if any of the hard drives in your chain either (a) fails or (b) begins to exhibit the signs of failure.

These signs may be anything from an audible beeping sound made by your computer (this can come through the speakers or sound like a click in the tower itself) or because the machine in question has been attempting to reboot itself over and over on a persistent loop.  Depending on your operating system you might also experience what many refer to as the dreaded ‘Blue Screen of Death’.

If you do experience any of these symptoms then again we recommend powering down the machine and contacting us immediately in order to increase your chances of recovering your ‘Bit Coinage’.
