Open Source vs. Enterprise VoIP Solutions

Similar to other industries, the VoIP industry also has been offering proprietary and open source VoIP solutions to businesses and customers. However, in the past decade, one more type of VoIP solution has been really popular, called, enterprise VoIP solution. In this article, I will share more details about an enterprise VoIP solution as well as the difference between an open source and an enterprise VoIP solution.

What is an enterprise VoIP solution?

An enterprise solution is an advanced version of an open source VoIP solution. The enterprise solution generally possesses more features, add-ons, modules, etc. to give better performance and returns over money to its users.

Open source vs. enterprise VoIP solution

You must know what an open source VoIP solution is. Therefore, I am not defining what an open source VoIP solution is. Now, let’s move ahead to explore the difference between an open source VoIP solution and an enterprise VoIP solution. This information will help you make the right choice.

1. Functionality

The first characteristic one should compare while making a choice is definitely features and functionalities. Even if you get a solution for free, but if it does not have the required features to meet your needs, then it will be no use to you. You may need to invest in developing missing features. This could be the case with an open source VoIP solution.

All open source VoIP solutions are powerful to function accurately and efficiently. However, open source VoIP software often holds limited features and functionalities. On the other hand, enterprise VoIP solutions are generally quite advanced and capable to give a competitive edge over third party VoIP solutions as well. Few advanced enterprise VoIP solutions are so feature rich and advanced that, they are known as smart telephony platforms.

2. Security

After features and functionalities, security is the next concern to be addressed. Of course, when you configure the software, your VoIP engineer needs to take some steps to keep your software and customer data secure. However, do you know that the software itself has to be secure?

Usually, both open source and enterprise VoIP solutions get developed by the VoIP development experts. Therefore, both solutions get developed in a way that they stay secure from attacks. However, open source VoIP solutions have open libraries and code. Therefore, anyone can create a hack script. On the other hand, the enterprise VoIP solution will have encrypted code if it is a smart telephony solution. Even if it does not have encrypted code, it will be more secure than open source VoIP software because its code is not openly available. Furthermore, some enterprise VoIP solutions offer added security with the “Fraud Detection” module.

3. Cost

Open source VoIP solutions have been so popular because of the cost factor. Definitely, open source VoIP software is cheaper than an enterprise solution. To use an enterprise solution, you will need to pay certain fees. However, this fee will be way cheaper than propriety VoIP software. Moreover, the features and functionalities of the VoIP enterprise solution will help you generate more revenues than you can generate using an open source solution.
