Understanding How Speech Recognition Program Functions

Posted by AdrianRocker on April 20th, 2014

Speech recognition often referred to as voice recognition is an advanced technology that has come a long way since its introduction. When used appropriately the speech recognition program can enable you type on your PC much quicker and faster than you ever thought of. Moreover, you can control your system without using a mouse or any other tools. Though, speech recognition software has been in the market since long, it is in the past few years when it has become more accurate and simple to be used. Previously, it was very expensive as well, but today lower-priced versions are also launched.

Steps involved in recognizing speech by the program

• For converting speech into on-screen messages or a PC command, the computer generally goes through multiple complex steps. Whatever is spoken, it creates vibration in air that is translated by the analog-to-digital converter into digital data, which the PC can indentify. In order to do this, it usually digitizes and samples the sound by gathering accurate measurements of the wave at regular intervals. And then the speech recognition program filters the already digitized sounds for removing the unwanted noise and also separates it into several band of frequency. Plus, it normalizes the sound and then adjusts it to continuous volume level. Obviously people do not talk in the same speed always, thus the sound should be adjusted in order to match with the template sound samples’ speed that are already  made available in the memory of the system.

• The signal is separated into various small segments. These segments are as short as hundredths of second, or thousandths when it comes to plosive consonant sounds. However, then the program matches the different segments to some known phonemes in proper language. Now what is a phoneme? It is considered as the smallest element in/of a language. It is a representation of sounds that people make to make a meaningful expression. Well, there are somewhere around 40 phonemes in English languages, whereas other languages have lesser number of phonemes.

• Though, the next step might seem to be a simple one, but it isn’t the case as it is one of the most essential focuses of speech recognition software research.  Here, the program basically examines the phonemes prior to other phonemes. This functions the contextual phoneme plot via a composite statistical model and then compares them to a huge collection of known sentences, phrases and words. However, the program decides the actual speech of the user and then either outputs those as text messages or gives command to the computer.

However, if you want to install these to you personal or official computer, contact a company that designs speech recognition program. Also, ask them whether API is available with them or not. This is not at all a typical add-on to the software, but this interface will enable you to interact with the program. On using this you will allow the application to have complete access to each speech recognition features, thereby helping you to have full control over the program.
