Acute lymphoblastic leukemia is a type of cancer that generally occurs in childhood. However, it has been noted to appear in adults as well. The majority of cases of lymphoblastic leukemia are attributed to genetic abnormalities, however, the most common cause of this type of cancer is infection with the Human Papilloma Virus.

Leukemia usually has a very fast spread throughout the body. There is no specific time frame in which it is diagnosed. A physician may be called in if symptoms are present but not necessarily until the late stages. This is one reason why doctors recommend taking a biopsy to rule out any other medical conditions.

The initial sign of this type of cancer is a generalized fever with a pale face and extremities. Sometimes, there are nausea, fatigue, vomiting, weight loss, skin rash, and abdominal pain. A doctor may also feel tingly or hot when he touches an area where there is a mass.

Many of the patients treated for this cancer will undergo various treatments. These include chemotherapy, gene therapy, and immunotherapy. The most common treatment involves using drugs to help fight off the tumor. These include:

Leukemia typically does not respond well to conventional treatments. But, if chemotherapy and radiation are not successful, other treatments may be used. There are several types of radiation therapies used, including -steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs} Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are given to relieve pain and swelling caused by cancer.

In the case of people with a genetic predisposition to this form of cancer, this is often combined with surgery to remove a cancerous mass. Surgery is often recommended to remove a lymph node or the entire lobe that contains the cancerous cells but is not required for people with normal genetics.
