What is Tourette Syndrome and Its Causes, Symptoms, and Treatment?

Posted by Sachin CMI on December 1st, 2020

Tourette syndrome is a medical condition characterized by involuntary, repetitive, and abrupt movements or sounds called tics. Some tics are relatively easy and are easily controlled by your central nervous system, while others, such as facial grimacing, mouth twitches, or eye blinking are more difficult to control and can be dangerous. People with Tourette disorder are often known as 'tics' because they have an unusually high degree of frustration or irritability. It usually starts during childhood, but the tics and other symptoms usually improve after several years and sometimes go away completely.

The symptoms of Tourette syndrome vary from person to person and are also highly variable according to the type of tic involved in the patient. If a child with Tourette syndrome is diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, he or she may have an uncontrollable tantrum when things go wrong. Some of the other types of tic that may occur in children with Tourette syndrome include stutter and clapping, nose twisting, pointing, and eye-blinking. Children may also exhibit repetitive gestures such as rubbing their hands or twirling their hair. Some children may even demonstrate other physical symptoms such as fidgeting, pulling of muscles, grunting, and coughing. Some of the emotional symptoms present in some children with Tourette syndrome are acting out, becoming argumentative, and being hostile.

However, there is no cure for Tourette syndrome, but treatment can help manage symptoms. The diagnosis of Tourette syndrome has been controversial. There are theories out there that say Tourette is a different disease, but there are also those who believe that Tourette is a mental disorder. Some doctors say that they cannot be classified as a mental disorder because their behavior is so erratic. They have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and other mental disorders. This is what causes the controversy and why it takes a long time to get a definitive diagnosis. It is better to treat this disease before it gets too bad.
