Maintenance of Agriculture Equipment: Standard Closing Wheels

Posted by Farm shop mfg on December 2nd, 2020

The season of planting is all about selecting the right equipment for the farms to get right germination and emergence of the seed.  Therefore, the farmers insist on using various types of agriculture equipment, including the planters with standard closing wheels, closing wheels assembly, and many more such devices. Generally, the farmers use two angled closing wheels on the planters for their farms. These closing wheels are made from solid rubber or the cast iron. Besides, there is an addition of spikes on the wheels.

The standard closing wheels are used with the planter and are required to perform the following two functions mainly :

  • Closing the furrow that is created. It is also called the seed-vee
  • Firm the soil that is covered around the seed.

According to the expert engineers of Farm Shop Mfg LLC, it is suggested that when you are preparing your fields, ensure that the closing wheels are working smoothly, considering the following aspects:

 1) Check the proper functioning of the closing wheels

When you are going to involve closing wheels see that they are placed and aligned centrally.  To check if your closing wheels are aligned properly, then draw a line on the floor. This can be done by lowering the openers on the floor and moving / driving it forward slowly.

Thereafter, you can check the closing wheels by the marks created by them. This condition is necessary to check for the proper functioning of the closing wheels.

 2) Chipping and holes in closing wheels.

Check if the closing wheels are chipped or have holes in them. There could be chunks missing out of them which can result in collecting the mud. Although in case, of dry conditions of soil, they will not cause much trouble and will do their job.  But when the mud is moist and wet, these chipped areas, holes and missing chunks will stick to the closing wheel. As a result, they will keep on adding and building upon the wheels to make them less effective. The sticking of mud on the wheels will give a poor performance and it will ultimately affect the growth of the seeds.

3) Spikes of the wheels

Moreover, the spikes of the wheel when used will result in making the diameter of the wheels smaller.  Besides, the tail assembly that holds the wheels will appear to be closer to the ground that is a little slanted downward and backwards.  This will not create suitable seed-vee as and will not be effective for closing the seed properly with the soil

4) Bearings of the closing wheels

Before starting the planting and preparing the soil, check out the condition of the bearings of the closing wheels.  In case dust, fertilizers, etc. are sticking on them, they tend to get corrosive and rusted. This will affect the durability of the material of the bearings and they will turn out to be grinding the bearing. As a result, the bearings will not move properly or spin freely. When the bearings are grinding even a little bit, they will drag the wheel along with sliding the soil.  Ultimately, the seed will be sliding in the seed-vee and there will be improper spacing between the seed-vee.  There you need to check the planter and bearings to ensure that they spin freely without any noise.

In the end, it is suggested that before you make your fields ready for seeds, ensure that these issues are not there in the agriculture equipment. Check out the closing wheels, wheels assembly, bearings and other parts fo the planter. Moreover, insist on buying good quality germinator closing wheels as manufactured by the Farm Shop Mfg LLC. It is made from steel, durable and will not corrode or rust. Alongwith this, you can buy other farm equipment from Farm Shop Mfg LLC.such as the closing wheel assembly, bearings, EndZone grain temp guard, Grain temp guard side wall mounting kit and many more such reliable and useful products.
