How to Go Wine Tasting – 5 Helpful Tips for Beginners

Posted by The Alchemist on December 2nd, 2020

Are you going wine tasting for the first time? Wine tasting is a great activity to enjoy if you love wine. It’s best enjoyed when you are in the company of friends or family. Here are the tips to keep in mind when joining a wine tasting for the first time:

  1. Look for the best places to go wine tasting

The Alchemist has a lot of information on some of the best wineries in BC. Just make sure you know what type of wine you want to sample and you can find the information that you’re looking for from The Alchemist.

Do your research beforehand, so you won’t end up disappointed when you do arrive at the winery. The Alchemist will tell you more about the specialty of the wineries and what kinds of wines you should expect.

  1. Dress appropriately

It depends on the season you are going. In the summer, it can be especially warm, so make sure you wear light and breezy clothes to avoid getting too hot. You can dress casually but you should also be respectful of your surroundings and avoid wearing clothes that might be deemed too casual. It’s going to be pretty there at the wineries as well, so you should wear clothes that you want to be photographed in.

  1. Avoid wearing strong fragrances

It’s best to skip the perfume and don’t use too much fabric conditioners on your clothes. That can affect your perception of the flavors and scents of the wines, which can then diminish the overall experience of the wine tasting event.

  1. Remember to bring water with you

Always bring water in reusable containers with you when going distillery or winery hopping. Since you will be sampling different drinks, you would want to clear your palate using water. It also helps keep you hydrated when going to different wineries, especially in the summer season.

  1. Know the rules in tasting wine

Spitting is fine but you can also swallow. Some people prefer spitting so they won’t get tipsy right away. If you’re visiting multiple wineries in a day, it’s best to spit it out rather than drink it.

Make sure you don’t go with an empty stomach unless you plan on staying there for lunch or dinner. Some wineries might have their own restaurant. You can check out The Alchemist in BC to find out which wineries have in-house restaurants or bars where you can dine in after your tasting event.

Remember to take notes. It’s all about determining what the flavors of the wines are and what makes them different from each other. That way, the next time you look for good quality wines, you know where to look.
