How to Travel with Your Baby for the Holidays

Posted by aden + anais on December 2nd, 2020

Traveling for the holidays can be hard with a baby. It’s probably cold out, you need to entertain them while traveling, and chances are, you have gifts to pack for dropping off. Those gifts compete for space that could be used for items needed for your little one, such as a stack of burp cloths you will inevitably need. Here are some useful tips for traveling with kids this holiday season while keeping everything as calm as possible, whether you’re dropping off gifts or headed to a cabin.

Bring Snacks

First, the golden rule with kids: bring snacks. Bring more snacks than you think you will need and bring a variety. You never know when you will be delayed, or a tire might go flat. Snacks will keep little ones occupied, and a hangry baby is a crying baby.

Entertain Them

While it might seem early for gifts, bring new toys to entertain your little ones, especially if they are toddlers. Coloring books are classic, but toys such as dolls can also keep them entertained for the trip. The key is something that is either hard to drop or is easy to pick up as you travel.

Pack the Essentials

There are two parts to packing the essentials. First, you need the essentials in your main luggage, such as baby monitor, bottles, diapers, and clothes. Long trips might mean you need quick and easy access to baby bibs, diapers, bottles, a change of clothes, burp cloths, and more.

Work Around Naptime

If possible, try to time the bulk of your traveling with naptime. That might mean your baby naps on the flight, or for the majority of the drive. This does not always work, as babies might be too excited, but it’s better to try and plan around naptime and take it into consideration than to just simply get up and go.

Ship Gifts Beforehand

If possible, ship gifts beforehand. This will save you space to fit something essential, like a receiving blanket, in your bags. It can also make travelling less stressful, not having to remember or lug around gifts as you go.

Dress for Warmth
Layer for the cold months. Keep layers handy for transferring your baby to and from a vehicle, but remember to take layers off before getting them buckled in their car seat. The extra bulk of jackets won’t work with car seats, making them unsafe. Instead, turn up the heat.

Meltdowns Happen

Above all else, know that meltdowns happen, and it will turn out okay in the end. Yes, your baby might cry on the flight if you’re flying, but other parents will understand. After a meltdown, your child will probably be quiet and calm for a while. Accept that there are good chances for a meltdown and prepare for it.
