When your own kidneys fail to perform it’s functions, dialysis is needed. Dialysis is the process of removing waste , salts and excess water from the blood to avoid from stagnetting in the body. It helps in maintain potassium, Sodium and bicarbonate levels in our body.

When is Dialysis needed ?

In most acute kidney failure, dialysis may be needed until the kidneys get better. Whereas, in chronic kidney failure your kidney may not get better and will need dialysis for the rest of your life.

Types of Dialysis :

There are two types of Dialysis. They are:

  •        Hemodialysis
  •        Peritoneal Dialysis

Hemodialysis :

In hemodialysis a machine is used to move your blood through a filter outside your body. This can be done either at the clinic or in our home.

If we opt the treatment at the clinic , we have to visit the clinic in specific intervals at a pre-scheduled time. Here, we get treated under the care and supervision of physicians , nurses and technicians .

If we opt the mode of treatment as treatment at home , then we have to visit the clinic once a month or according to the schedule given by the doctors to maintain our conditions and check the stability.

Peritoneal Dialysis :

In Peritoneal Dialysis, the lining of your belly is filled with a sterile solution to filter your blood. It is conducted only at home.

If you are comfortable to perform yourself, you can opt for home treatment. In home treatment you can perform dialysis 4 to 7 days a week. You can escape from travelling clinic frequently . In hemodialysis you need others help , who have been trained with the therapy for performing it. We can contact them any time around the corner.

If there is no one to help at home or we do not need to get dialyzed frequently or we are not comfortable to perform it ourselves , we can always visit the clinic for the treatment. The patient has to visit the clinic as per the prescribed schedule. The average treatment time may be around four hours. During that  period of time we can consult a physician.
