Whenever choosing a yoga mat, we always think about the thickness, size and price in the first place. However, in fact, it is the material made for yoga mat that matters because a slippy, uncomfortable or over-rough yoga mat may bring unpleasant using experience and even lead to strain and injury. Hence, it is necessary to understand the differences between yoga masts and pick the appropriate one that fits for you the best before you get started with your hot yoga sessions. At present, the most common materials made of yoga mats on the market are: NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber), TPE (thermoplastic elastomer), Rubber, PU rubber (polyurethane), PVC.

1. NBR Yoga Mats

NBR (nitrile butadiene rubber) is a synthetic rubber that is primarily used for the manufacturing of oil-resistant rubber products. It has a great property of wear-resistance, but not working so well in the aspects of non-slip and elasticity. Because calcium oxide may be involved as a filler during processing, if the proportion of calcium oxide is not well controlled, then the final products may cause skin allergy or burning sensation. Furthermore, due to the foaming agent applied during manufacturing, NBR yoga mats tend to be odorous.

2. TPE Yoga Mats

TPE is usually made of plastic and rubber polymers and widely applied to sports equipment. The yoga mat made of this material has good ability of anti-skid, elasticity and durability, but the price is generally a little higher. Technically, TPE material is more suitable for yoga exercise.
