4 Things Bodybuilders Should Do in the New Year

Posted by GASP on January 16th, 2021

The new year is here, and maybe you’re ready to raise the bar. You weren’t planning on just sticking to the usual routine, were you? Of course not, as the most-seasoned bodybuilders will tell you long-term success is all about conquering new challenges. If you want to take things to the next level this year, try these four New Year’s resolutions for bodybuilding.

Give Your Training Meaning

Many of us come to the iron sport with a specific purpose in mind. For some, it’s to bulk up; for others, it was to burn flab and get lean. Whatever the case, many of us start lifting purely for the fun of it somewhere along the way. That’s fine, but why not give your training more purpose or a new goal that drives your every workout? Dream big and make a goal to match. Perhaps you want to compete on the national level, or maybe you want to get a sponsorship with your favorite bodybuilding apparel brand. If you’ve been lifting just for the fun of it, the time might be right to set a clear goal.

Eliminate Excuses

It’s time to eliminate excuses once and for all. We’re all guilty of going easy some days or just lifting on autopilot, and we’re worse off because of it. No matter how big or small your excuse is, unless you’re nursing an injury or taking a planned rest, aim to go as hard as you can and put your all into every workout. Get to bed early if necessary, follow a purposeful training regimen, and give 100% effort 100% of the time.

Become a More Well-Rounded Athlete

How long have you been following the same style of training? A consistent routine can be a double-edged sword in many cases. Consistency can forge results, but it can also keep us in our comfort zone. This year, break out of the mold and try new things. For example, if you’ve been a once-a-day lifter for as long as you can remember, try lifting twice a day and see how it affects your results.

Or, if you’d like to get out of the weight room completely, try cross-training with a different routine or sport. Whether it’s cycling, swimming, or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, incorporating something different into your routine can help you become a more well-rounded athlete. Don’t worry: Your bodybuilding clothing isn’t going anywhere, so you won’t need to say goodbye to the iron sport—or its apparel.

Become a Mentor

Even if you’ve only been lifting for a few years, you might have plenty of wisdom to offer a beginner. Chances are you have friends outside of your lifting circle that have made it their resolution to start working out; try mentoring them. Giving back to the fitness community through mentorship is rewarding. You get to see someone grow and progress, which can, in turn, inspire you to do more. So, if you know someone even remotely interested in lifting, help them start off right.
