Alliance health model

The chapter provided one of the most important topics in future of a community health nurse. It described the guiding principles and theoretical orientation of a community health nurse. The guiding principles provided a broad concept of what is expected from me as a community practitioner and some of the competencies I will require. The second chapter described the importance of offering community health in the context of a community in an ethical manner.  The chapter emphasized on the need for cultural competence and ethics while practicing in the community. It was intriguing to learn how caring in the community is affected by numerous factors and the need to comprehend how these factors interact. It was interesting to learn ethics from the perspective of nursing because I used to understand ethics from a business perspective. The third chapter explored the alliance for health model as a complement model to evidence-based nursing and described how the model can be used in practice. The vision for assessment provided by chapter three highlights the continuous nature of community health assessment. The model defines community health nursing as a venture between the client and the nurse.  The definition helped me understand community nursing as a client-centered model that gives the client a voice to participate in designing interventions.

Reading the first three topics of the book provided insight that shifted my paradigm about community nursing. In terms of care, I thought community nursing is similar to inpatient care where a patient mostly comes with a certain illness and through assessment the client is diagnosed. Community health nursing is detailed because one is considering the community environment and other factors that affect the overall health status of a person.  The importance of focusing on community-based needs, use of local resources, and involvement of the people, cultural consideration and knowledge based practice enabled me to view community health nursing from a broader perspective.  Community health nursing is concerted efforts by community health nurses, the community, physicians, pharmacists and other stakeholders to ensure the community receive holistic health services that are of high quality, effective and accessible to all. These stakeholders work together to prevent diseases in the community.

The alliance for health model components has numerous similarities with evidence-based practices and bedside practice. The alliance for health care is an extension of inpatient care with emphasizes being given community-based identification of health needs, involvement of clients in the care process. The model provides a way of assessing needs for nursing workforce. For example, the expertise of the interdisciplinary team is required for effective community health nursing.  Similarly, evidence-based care requires nurses to work with other team members in the health care continuum to ensure efficiency through coordination and cooperation. In addition, evidence-based care in the bedside requires the involvement of the client in the care process including making decision. The alliance for health model also requires the validation of services by the client.  However, unlike acute care nursing, community health nursing is focused on prevention of illness.  A lot of emphasize is given to identifying community needs through a collaborative process.
