Keys to Hiring a Good Moving Company

Planning a move can be stressful. What can make it even more stressful is having to deal with multiple broken items during your move, from working with the wrong moving company. Part of the service that local moving companies in Chicagoland offer, is helping you ease that load. Here are some things to consider to help you choose a quality moving company.

The “Three” Rule

When you are calling around to find a moving company, it is not advisable to jump on the very first quote. Get more to compare it to. Three, if possible. It’s best to have at least three companies, come to your location, and give you the most accurate estimate. It can sometimes be difficult to give an accurate estimate sight unseen.

Get Recommendations

A quite trustworthy way to find a quality moving company, is through the recommendations of family, friends, and coworkers. In some cases, if you are working with a realtor, or even your local moving store may be able to suggest a quality moving company to you. However, if you are searching online yourself, then be sure to view valid, third-party reviews, outside of the companies website, where only the best reviews may be posted.

Look for Warning Signs

Did your moving company arrive in a rented van? A quality, experienced moving company will have their own moving equipment. Are they trying to get upfront money out of you? If this is the case, you should question the legitimacy of their business. A quality moving company will not require a cash deposit before the move. When they came to give you an estimate, how professional were they? Were they late? Were they able to confidently answer your questions? If they can’t answer your questions with straight answers, then this is a red flag.

Are They Insured and Licensed?

Are you moving within the state or to another state? If you are moving within the state, you can verify this information through your consumer affairs offices, locally. If you are moving to another state, you can check the license of the moving company through the U.S. Department of Transportation Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s website, ProtectYourMove.gov. Here you can get the moving company’s U.S. DOT number. If necessary, you will need this to file a claim against the company later.

If you are planning a move, consider local moving companies in Chicagoland.
