You can get many uses out of used shipping containers. The economy is making commodity prices soar higher in today's global situation, while mankind is harvesting what it has sown from nature. As prices rise and businesses continue to lay off staff, more individuals find themselves homeless and cramming for ways to pay their bills.

In order to build houses, apartments, studios and other shelter camps, organisations involved in community services use second hand shipping containers. There have already been successful projects in London for two- and three-story apartments. Homeless residents who qualify are given some of the units, while others are rented out or sold out at discounted prices.

In Amsterdam, inside the school campuses, cargo shipping containers are used to build dormitories for students. According to the financial capacity of the student, the room accommodation and amenities vary. There are air-conditioned rooms, toilets and bathrooms, and the size of the rooms can be great for 1 to 6 people. In total, there are mess halls, entertainment areas, reception, lounges and more in the dormitory.

A few of the relief organisations constructed relief houses and permanent houses with used shipping containers during Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The designs of these houses are unique and appealing, while the basic housing facilities are complete.

In Haiti, a similar event occurred when it was devastated by a powerful earthquake. In order to raise more funds, the groups are organising activities to finance the plan to build a small community of houses made of steel containers.

People are specialists in various fields behind the projects. For example, the seismic activity and strength of hurricanes are taken into account in the construction of houses, so they will not be easily destroyed when calamities strike again. Each unit also comes with a garden of its own. It is believed that the project will house 2 million Haitians.

Resort houses are also made out of used shipping containers in some parts of the islands. In order to produce a 2-storey resort home, complete with a bar, living room, master suite, bedroom, kitchen, dining room, 2nd-story balcony, and toilet and bathroom, the containers are connected side by side and from top to bottom.
