Polycrystalline Silicon, Raw Material for the Electronics and Solar PhotovoltaicPosted by coherent market insights on December 21st, 2020 Polycrystalline silicon (also known as poly-Si or polysilicon) is a high purity, polycrystalline form of silicon, used as a raw material by the electronics and solar photovoltaic industry. Polycrystalline silicon has many useful electronic properties that make it ideal for use in many electronics applications, such as the ability to polarize electrons, which allows current to travel through the semiconductor more quickly and with more energy. Another benefit is that because the electrons are polarized, they can be deposited on the surface of the semiconductor rather than being forced through the lattice. This feature is called ‘thermally induced deposition’ and allows for the transport of electricity through silicon atoms. Another important benefit is that the crystalline structure of polycrystalline silicon (similar to glass or quartz) generate electric current, which in turn enables many different types of devices to work.
