Rotten food. A giant rip in the dress. A DJ who doesn’t show up. These are just a few of the many what-if scenarios that cause couples stress and anxiety as the big day approaches. Luckily, brides- and grooms-to-be can make one blanket purchase to set their worrying minds at ease: wedding insurance. As its name suggests, wedding insurance financially protects couples against a slew of unplanned events that could otherwise tarnish their special day – and bank account.“Wedding cancellation insurance can help protect against not only the financial impact of unforeseen cancellation [or] postponement, but also against vendors who do not fulfill their obligations,” says Steven Lauro, vice president of WedSafe insurance, a subsidiary of Chicago-based Aon Corp. With a host of customizable policies available, couples can now insure against all sorts of matrimonial misfortunes, from problems with the dress or rings to disastrous weather to ruined photographs—even cold feet, says Muhammad Ali, owner of InsureAWedding, provided by Tycho Insurance Services, Santa Clara, Calif. “It’s more than just simply a liability coverage,” he says. And with the current state of the economy, now more than ever couples need to protect themselves, Lauro says. “With the economy struggling over the past two years, the percentage of vendors going out of business has grown,” he says. “We have seen numerous issues with all types of wedding vendors who have accepted deposits or full payment but have not performed.”Lauro recalls one former client who was saved by the insurance. Two weeks before her wedding, her anticipated venue was shut down by the county, not to reopen before the big day. Over the course of a weekend, her reimbursement checks were in the mail– financial crisis averted.Inversely, inasmuch as couples want to insure against potential issues with vendors and venues, Ali says the venues, too, are increasingly requiring that clients purchase a policy before booking. He estimates that 80 percent of his customers seek out basic liability insurance that protects the bride and groom in the case of property damage or bodily injury at the ceremony, not because they want to, but because they have to.Still, couples should consider moving beyond simple liability coverage, says Lauro. “While reports indicate that the average cost of weddings has dropped over the past year, it is still among the most significant investment any us make into one day of our lives,” he explains. “A wedding insurance policy can provide so many benefits at such a relatively low cost, it makes all the sense in the world to consider protecting yourself.”How low of a cost? WedSafe boasts a plan that costs only , and InsureAWedding offers a policy for just .To find an affordable plan that suits your needs, do some research, as the vast array of providers and policy options varies not only from company to company, but from state to state, says Lauro. “Look for wedding insurance providers who have been in business, have an established presence and provide the product you need at reasonable rates,” he says. “Find a reputable company who specializes in the type of coverage you are looking for, and inquire about what products and benefits are right for you.”Copyright ?
