In this article: The most recent Olympic boxing event was the Gold medal bout between Philippines' Edy Mendez and Russia's Vasili Oschepkov. วิจารณ์ มวย ลุ ม พิ นี วัน นี้ The World Boxing Organization has a very long and distinguished history, dating back at least to 1964 when it was founded as an exhibition sport organized by Germany. The first ever boxing competition took place in Mexico City against Vasili Oschepkov. This fight became the first World Boxing championship.

According to the WBA, "Mendez earned a unanimous decision (yscoring stoppages) to retain his title." A quick citation needed to do with WBC heavyweight champion Russia's Vasili Oschepkov. According to the World Boxing Council, "Oschepkov stopped Mendez after 12 rounds and then declared the match a draw. The result is not known."

An interesting note on Mendez's win over Oschepkov was the manner in which he lost the fight. In the clip shown on fox sports, it appeared that Mendez started to get the better of Oschepkov during the second round. He knocked off the Russian with a right hook, but didn't appear to be too hurt. Then, he went on to score a number of unanswered punches, which cut short the fight. This led to much discussion on whether this was a knock out, a knock down, or what, but the winner was given the belt by line judge Michael Johnson. Oschepkov was awarded the world boxing championship after scoring a close knockout.

This is just one of many examples of a fighter being tested positive for steroids by the World Boxing Association or WBA. In addition to this, another boxer tested positive for performance enhancing drugs by the same organization, but was able to contest the result and have the test annulled. Ruben Figueiredo, a former college athlete was testing positive for steroid use after a match with Diego Sanchez in an exhibition, where Figuedo tested positive for a banned steroid. Figuedo was allowed to fight again following the positive test. Sanchez lost the fight.

While there is no clear cut answer on whether or not boxing really has made America safer, there is plenty to say in favor of the sport. Boxers like Mendez, Oschepkov, and Figueiredo are not only showing they have what it takes to beat opponents physically, but also that they have what it takes to fight and beat opponents mentally. So even though WBC rules state that boxers must "submit" rather than "struck," it does not mean they are automatically safe in boxing. However, the boxing portion of their fights does appear to be helping American's avoid using banned substances.
