What is the Dot Return to Duty Process?

The process of dot return to duty Process is varied by companies and industries, but the following are specific steps or tests that need to be taken by the DOT:

• The immediate removal of an employee for safety purposes: If you are on the road in your state or another state, he/she must be notified to cease driving as it is safe to do so.

• Initial evaluation with a DOT-qualified substance abuse professional: During the face to face interview, the SAP will evaluate the employee to understand his/her present situation and history.

• Awareness and treatment program: The SAP will prescribe a treatment program for donors based on the initial interview.

• Follow-up evaluation with the SAP: As this evaluation is completed the employee goes for the next evaluation with the same SAP.

• Follow-up test schedule: The SAP will give the Designated Employer Representative the schedule of follow-up tests.

• Drug test: Once the SAP confirms that the employee has successfully completed all processes, he/she will recommend the Resistance Temperature Detector (RTD) test. If a negative test result is received, the employee may recommence safety-sensitive functions.

A Substance Abuse Professional Will Have To:

• Conduct thorough face-to-face assessment or follow-up evaluation.
• Recommend a required plan for treatment and education.
