Life after DOT Drug Test

Posted by Affordable Evaluations on November 12th, 2020

Most of the American companies require alcohol and drug tests for job positions that are safety sensitive, such as flight attendants and CDL drivers. These preliminary checks are undertaken by the transportation companies to protect public safety. But if you would like to restore your career after a failed alcohol and drug test, many licensed companies can help you get back to work under the guidance of a Substance Abuse Professional (SAP) that is DOT qualified to complete the return to duty steps.

A negative result in the drug test does not mark the finishing line in your career. But if you are a driver by profession, you need to comply by the drug testing authorities and pass the test to get ready resume your work position without violating any rules.

Return to Duty Process

All the positive alcohol evaluations or drug tests and test refusal records are contained by the FMCSA Clearinghouse. This means that the entire system is linked, and you cannot move from one employer to another without raising suspicions. Until you go through the return to duty DOT test, the failed tests and violations of the law are not deleted from your personal record.

The Clearinghouse information is accessible nationwide, so you cannot migrate from one state and apply for work in a different state. If you want to get back to work after a failed test, you need to be reevaluated by an SAP provider who is DOT qualified.

The 3-Step Procedure

1. Schedule an appointment with a DOT qualified SAP provider
2. Complete the required recommendations for follow-up treatment and education
3. Obtain the final evaluation to determine if you are eligible to return to work

How can SAP help?

SAPs are certified psychologists, doctors, social workers, and counselors that have completed the specialized training given by the transportation department. In compliance with the DOT regulations, SAP is the person that evaluates your present circumstances, makes remedial recommendations and creates a return to work program for you.

To establish your recommendations, your SAP provider will check the nature of your case at the time of the consultation and advise accordingly. These recommendations may include counseling, alcohol or drug treatment, education, or any other steps. This information is then sent to the Designated Employer Representative (DER) of the company by your SAP.

The Final Evaluation

Just follow the instructions of your SAP once you have the draft with your recommendations. Your SAP provider will be your guide back to work, every step of the way. You will need to complete a follow-up evaluation with your SAP after the treatment recommended or education criteria for the job are completed. This final evaluation will decide if you require any more preliminary steps to take back your place in an organization and your eligibility for safety sensitive duty.
