4 Signs That It’s Time for a New Gym

Posted by GASP on February 11th, 2021

A gym can be more than just a place to work out. It’s where effort is unleashed, goals are achieved, and memories are made. If you’re spending a lot of time at the gym, it’s not uncommon for it to feel like a second home. Does it have to be your forever home, or is it time for a change of scenery?

No matter how much blood, sweat, or tears you’ve put into a gym, you’re paying to use someone else’s equipment. If it’s not cutting it for you any longer, there’s nothing wrong with seeking a better option. Is it time for a switch? Here are four signs that it might be.

There Isn’t a Sense of Community

Some lifters are fine going it alone. Their community is online and on social media, so they don’t have a problem keeping their heads down and banging through a workout on their own. On the other hand, many other lifters enjoy the communal aspect of lifting. Whether you like to compete or just like trading iron stories, if you don’t feel like you know any of the regulars at your gym, there might be a better place for you.

Equipment Is Breaking Down

Whether you prefer free weights or machines, you want your tools to work reliably. It’s bound to happen that your favorite machine is down for repairs at one time or another, but it’s another thing if it just sits there collecting dust waiting for management to replace a cable. If equipment keeps breaking down and nobody is fixing it, it’s a sign the gym isn’t as committed to your success as you would like.

Your Purpose and Goals Are Changing

Not every gym is made for every goal. While typical commercial gyms can serve the needs of many average lifters, if your goals have become more specialized, you might need a facility and selection of equipment tailored to your needs. For example, if you’ve decided you want to compete in a bodybuilding show, then high-quality bodybuilding clothes are just one part of the equation: You also need a support group around you and the right equipment for the best results. If your goals have become more specific, seek out a gym that caters to them.

The Commute Is Holding You Back

The gym might be your second home, but if your first home has changed recently and your commute is now longer, consider switching gyms. Those minutes spent commuting can add up: If it takes you 15 minutes longer to get there, when you add in the return trip home, that’s an extra 30 minutes of your day spent driving. Ideally, you spend most of your time in your bodybuilding clothing lifting, not sitting in the driver’s seat. If your gym is a typical commercial gym and not a specialized iron playground, driving more than 20 minutes shouldn’t be necessary, depending on your region.

If any of these signs ring true, take a look around a try a day pass at a different gym. Saying goodbye can be hard, but sometimes a change of scenery is what you need to reach your goals.
