LAMINAR AIR FLOW: ABOUT, TYPE & WHERE TO BUY

Posted by Admin on February 11th, 2021

The laminar air flow cabins, also known as cabins biological safety or tissue culture hood, have been developed with the aim of providing a sterile environment allowing manipulation securely biological or sterile materials, which cannot suffer any contamination originating from the environment or still the one who is handling these certain samples. The Laminar Air Flow has an exhaust system, equipped with HEPA filter (s), which promotes the recirculation or renewal of 100% of the air. This type of equipment protects only the products that are handled inside from environmental contamination, not preventing the air inside the chapel to escape to the environment. According to the equipment's air flow direction, laminar flows can be horizontal (100% air renewal), or vertical (100% air recirculation).

It is also through the Laminar Air Flow Booths (biological safety cabinets) that the operator - such as a student of scientific initiation - will be protected against contamination of the product he is handling, as well as the environment around him. The laminar flow cabinet/tissue culture hood can be ventilated with ambient air flow, and its front can be fully opened, with a panel front panel or closed front panel. In addition, UV lamps are placed inside the laminar flow cabinet, which is a form of biological safety considered quite efficient since it is able to eliminate the risk of contamination caused by small biological agents, such as bacteria and fungi. Its biosafety standards is related to the way in which the air is filtered. In the Laminar Air Flow/Tissue Culture Hood, the air being blown needs to be filtered with HEPA filters.

Within chemical laboratories, several types of contaminants can be found that are potentially harmful to the health of professionals. Therefore, it is very important that these places have specific equipment that provides protection for those who live in the work environment. This is the case, for example, with the Laminar Flow Hood and the biological safety cabinet.

This equipment is used inside the laboratories to promote the recirculation of 100% of the air, creating sterile work areas for the handling of biological materials that cannot suffer contamination from the external environment, guaranteeing the protection of the manipulated samples. Laminar air flow and Biological Safety Cabin are common equipment in microbiological analysis laboratories, used to create sterile areas during sample preparation, inoculations and other routines where this is necessary.

LAMINAR AIR FLOW TYPES:

The laminar air flow cabinet (biological safety cabinet) can be divided into two basic categories. Find out below!

  1. Horizontal Laminar Air Flow: The horizontal laminar air flow cabinet, in which 100% of the air circulating inside the device is constantly renewed. Performs 100% air renewal and offers protection only for the materials to be handled. It consists of a HEPA filter, which is located on the wall at the bottom of the chapel, directing the filtered air horizontally.
  1. Vertical Laminar Air Flow: The vertical laminar air flow cabinet, on the other hand, works with total air recirculation, that is, 100% of the air present there is reused. Also where there is 100% air recirculation, offering protection for both the operator and the environment against possible risky contaminants. It consists of an Absolute HEPA Filter, located on the top of the equipment, with the function of directing the filtered air downwards and vertically.
