4 Ways Bodybuilders Can Crank Up the Intensity

Spend More Time Under Tension

There’s a time for explosiveness, and a time for slower, smoother reps. Increased time under tension is a not-so-secret weapon that legendary bodybuilders have used for decades. You don’t need to change the lift or even the weight; just slow the entire rep down. The more stress you can place on your muscles, the better. Try lifting to a slower tempo or adding a pause at the top of the movement. It might not seem like much, but you’ll feel it after the workout.

Minimize Rest Periods

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with resting between sets, but unless you’re attempting a PR or big lift, there isn’t a reason to lower your heart rate too much. If you find yourself spending a bit too long sitting down or looking at your phone in-between sets, become more disciplined. 30 to 60 seconds is plenty of rest time for most bodybuilders focused on building muscle and leaning out. By keeping your heart rate somewhat elevated, you can enjoy a fat-burning effect and speed through the workout.

Get Experimental
