Terra Nation: What?s in a name?

Posted by sportscorner on May 8th, 2015

Terra Nation is known for its unique and high-quality products. However, either than the innovative

designs of their products, which Terra Nation refers to as “objects,” one thing most people often notice

is the strange name of its products. So what’s up with the names?

First off, it is best to understand how Terra Nation views itself. Terra Nation is not just a company, it is a

community that aims to provide gear that will heighten all the stages of excursion in the water to assure

a more pleasurable and carefree experience for everyone. This perspective includes Terra Nation’s

“Beach Republic” philosophy, which entails that when everyone is near the water they are all equal and

leave their stress and worry behind, and just enjoy their time with Mother Nature.

Terra Nation’s metaphysical perspective also influences the names of its products. The company uses

the influence of the Rapanui tribe, a tribe that was known to inhabit Easter Island over a millennia ago.

The tribe lived peacefully in an idyllic spot in the island. The lush greenery and the diverse fauna

provided shelter, food and even clothing to the tribe. However, they were known to favor the pristine

waters that surround the island as well. The tribe would fish and look for oysters. The waters greatly

influenced their way of life.

This simple yet blissful existence is the reason Terra Nation uses the Rapanui language to name its

products. The “Hare Kohu” for instance, can be roughly translated to “family shade” since “Hare” stands

for family, home or house while “Kohu” refers to shade. However, despite its native influence, Terra

Nation products are innovative wonders. The Hare Kohu, for example, is a modernized tent that has 98

percent UV protection and has mesh windows for better ventilation, as well as privacy. It has an

automatic opening and closing system for easy assembly, and is structured to provide extra stability.

The Rapanui word “Roa” is translated as “long” or “wide,” which means it perfectly describes Terra

Nation’s “Roa Kohu.” The state-of-the-art tent provides a wide shade for two or three people. Similar to

the Hare Kohu, it provides UV protection, has added stabilizers to protect against strong winds and has

air vents for increased ventilation. Its two-pole structure makes it easy to set-up. While side pockets can

be filled with pebbles or sand for added stability. The Roa Kohu also comes with a carry bag for easy

storage after use.

Finally, the “Ika Kopu” may have a rather grisly Rapanui translation, since “Ika” could either mean fish or

animal, and “Kopu” refers to belly. In context, it does make sense since the Ika Kopu is a bag, and bags

during earlier times where made of animal skin and was used to carry, among others, fish. The Ika Kopu,

however, is made of sturdy materials, for protection and ventilation, and is coated with polyurethane to

protect it from wet objects. It also has an insulated cooling compartment and all-purpose tissue for

cleaning. The sling bag comes complete with organizer pockets, loops for holding objects, holder rings

for books, a strap for carrying beach mats and an insulated cooling compartment.

Their names, as well as their innovative structure, certainly makes Terra Nation products more

interesting. To find out more about Terra Nation products available in Qatar, visit the nearest SportsCorner retail store near you.
