Whether you're a beginner or not, having the right yoga mat can make your practice to the next level. It's sometimes overwhelming to make the right choice with the plethora of mats you see in the market.

From the vast majority of yoga mats, you need to choose, the one that fits your style and makes your yoga experience different. Here are the major 3 things you need to consider while choosing the right yoga mat:

  1. Thickness

General yoga mat comes with 1/16-inch thickness and it is ideal for practicing balance postures. It also gives a strong connection to the floor. The downside provides less cushioned support for you. If you choose a 1/4-inch thick yoga mat, it will be ideal for back support during core work, inversions, and other postures. This causes your bones to dig into the ground. You can go for a medium standard yoga mat labeled 3.3 mm or 1/8-inch thick. Also, buy a gym bag with a yoga mat holder so that you can carry the mat easily on your back.

  1. Material

It is true sense, yoga mats that are thicker last longer than thin mats. A thick mat lasts a pretty long time, so this might not be a concern. You must consider the material of your mat. Here are some common materials used in the manufacturing of yoga mats:

  • PVC is a plastic-based material

In the market, you will several many mats that are made of PVC. PVC makes the mats durable, cleanable, and grippy. Also, they’re not absorbent therefore, sometimes it becomes very slick when wet with sweat. They are also latex-free and it is a major consideration if you have latex allergies. They are non-biodegradable and not an eco-friendly material.

  • Thermoplastic elastomer

It is called a human-made blend of plastic and rubber polymers. These mats are more environmentally friendly than PVC and some completely recyclable. However they are less durable than PVC, but they are still a great option to go for.

  • Eco or natural mats

These are the mats that are made from natural rubber, cotton, and jute. They’re usually less grippy but offer plenty of traction against your hands and feet. They may not be durable as you want but they’re definitely worth the pain if sustainability is a priority.

  1. Texture

The third most important thing to look for is the mat’s texture. This will control the amount of traction it has. If you sweat a lot, a grippy mat will keep you from slipping around. If the mat’s bumpy texture bothers you, make sure the smooth mat controls the moisture mechanism.

Yoga can be a pricey practice if the right choice mat is not purchased. If you want to buy a mat within your budget, you’ll want to make sure you’re getting a good value for your mat. If you get a mat that isn’t plain, standard-sized PVC, you’re my go-to have to pay some extra dough.

Also, make sure the features like antimicrobial treatments or cool designs are also there along with good material and thickness. If you’re new to yoga, you can buy the best Crossfit Gym bag that have multiple compartments.
