If the pointer is small and runs on a coin cell battery, its output is probably less than 5 milliwatts.
If it is pen-sized and runs on AA or AA batteries, it is likely to be more powerful and can exceed 5 milliwatts.
It can exceed 5 milliwatts when operating in flashlight-sized AA or AA battery clusters, or when operating on lithium batteries.
Pointers sold with battery chargers can probably quickly run out of battery and overwhelm you.
Some pointers are sold with a removable cap that spreads the beam into a pattern. When used uncapped, the beam becomes a single beam that can exceed 5 milliwatts.
Look for videos or photos that show burning, melting, balloon popping, or bright, clear rays of a USB laser pointer
