Add organizational value with MBB certification

Some people say Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma are the two sides of the same coin. Such people may not be wrong in their assessment. Six Sigma was launched as a concept in 1986 and Lean Six Sigma was introduced in 2002. Lean Six Sigma follows the basic principles of Six Sigma and there is not much of a difference between the two. So, when you do your MBB certification, you can also work on Lean Six Sigma projects. You will, however, do well to go through your Lean Six Sigma certification.

Six Sigma works on the DMAIC principles and Lean Six Sigma also follows the same principles. Six Sigma is a process that eliminates the defects in a process to make it more robust. The measure of Six Sigma, as we all know, is 3.4 defects in a million opportunities. However, this is the not the limit. Companies like Boeing and Airbus have higher Six Sigma measures because they deal with the lives of people. Motorola and GE are considered to be the biggest flag bearers of Six Sigma.

Lean Six Sigma, on the other hand, eliminates wastes from a process to make it more robust. Every process is first analyzed and the customer requirements from the process are clearly identified. Anything that doesn’t form part of customer requirement is treated as waste and this waste is then eliminated to create the process exactly as per the customer expectations. This is the difference between the two processes. Toyota is considered to be the flag bearer of Lean Six Sigma.

As far as MBB certification is considered, both Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma have the provision. A master black belt is at the top of the Six Sigma hierarchy. This person is the internal consultant for an organization and their job is to identify processes that need improvement, get the project team together and improve the process. At the same time, the master black belt also coaches the project team and offers their inputs wherever it is required.

Organizations run lean projects because they want to eliminate waste. For someone to work on these projects, it is important that they go through their Lean Six Sigma certification. Once someone is certified, they are awarded a belt and they can run the projects like Six Sigma projects.

There are institutes that offer both MBB certification and Lean Six Sigma certification. These institutes run regular classes that the participants attend. Depending on the color of the belt one is looking to achieve, the duration of the classes is decided. A green belt course, for instance, is two weeks while a black belt course is for four weeks.
